On the Acquisition and Maintenance of Lean Mass

This session will cover the minimum necessary requirements to grow and maintain muscle and bone across a lifetime. Attention will be given to the base rate of degradation, when and why it occurs, when it is of clinical consequence, and what we can do as clinicians to prevent and undo these negative changes.

Objectives:

  • Know the typical pathogenesis for sarcopenia and immobility
  • Know the nutritional/training stimuli necessary to grow lean mass
  • Know the relevant pharmacologic options to support the lifestyle stimuli.

Nutrition Bites - Practical Dietary Education for Weight Loss in Primary Care

Nutritional education is often difficult for patients to access and fraught with false or misleading information. This session is geared toward primary care physicians and will offer practical advice and evidence based tools to counsel patients on nutrition for weight loss.

Objectives:

  • Understand the challenges of nutritional education in primary care settings.
  • Review evidence-based recommendations for nutrition aimed at weight loss.
  • Utilize practical tools such as 24-hour dietary recall, calorie tracking and BMR estimation.

 

Statement of Accreditation
The Texas Osteopathic Medical Association (TOMA) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. TOMA designates is program for a maximum of 2 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Dr. Dante Paredes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Department of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. He works in the HSC Health Central Family Medicine Clinic with a clinical focus on reversing diabetes, obesity, and generalized anxiety disorder. In addition, he teaches clinical nutrition for the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine Family Medicine Core Clerkship. He is core facultyn for the Medical City of Fort Worth Family Medicine and Osteopathic Neuromuscular Medicine residencies.

Megan Woolford, MD is a native Texan from the Houston area who enjoys the variety of primary care practice as a Family Medicine physician. She is particularly passionate about weight loss and nutrition, women’s health care and mental health and wellness. She completed her MD degree at Baylor College of Medicine and her Family Medicine residency at Lonestar Family Health Center, and now practices and teaches at Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
