Session Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to define two-eyed seeing, a conception of epistemology, in which both indigenous knowledge and contemporary neuroscience are equally valid and respectful of each other.

2. Participants will be able to list three ways in indigenous approaches to addiction using two-eyed seeing differ from conventional approaches.   

3. Participants will be able to list three key concepts for how to successfully work within indigenous communities as a health care practitioner from outside the community.

Presentation Title: Successful Treatment of Deaf Patients: Communication is Key!   Jane Hecker-Cain & Joshua Seal

Session Objectives:

 1. Train their office staff to sensitively respond to calls for appointments including requesting the appropriate number and kind of ASL interpreters.                     

2.  Train Medical Assistants to effectively communicate with deaf patients during an office visit by appropriately using sign language interpreter(s) and using alternative, visual methods to review medications.

3.   Effectively communicate with Deaf patients during an office visit by appropriately using sign language interpreter(s) and supplementing written material with visuals whenever possible.

4.  Understand the pros and cons of the three options for providing interpreting services: in-person, Video Remote and Video Relay.
