Assessing Beyond BMI


Learning Objectives:

  1. To understand both the benefits and limitations of utilizing BMI as part of a clinical exam
  2. To state how BMI can utilized in clinical decision making across the lifespan
  3. Understand how other anthropometric measures when combined with BMI provide a valuable perspective of metabolic risk
  4. Acknowledge the terms “overfat” and “underfat” apply to body composition assessment and long-term health

Dr. JuliSu Dimucci-Ward, PhD

Dr. Dimucci-Ward is an Assistant Professor for Prevention and Public Health at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas and she works with Family Medicine, Pediatrics and Endocrine practices at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. As a researcher, healthcare geneticist, dietitian and certified diabetes educator, she has developed diabetes education programs, worked in corporate wellness, and developed ‘conversation maps’ for medical companies to guide patient education. The focus of her research is epigenetics, which she describes as “where the rubber hits road and where science and clinical medicine meet to serve patients.”  Dr. Dimucci-Ward earned her Ph.D. in Health Care Genetics from Clemson University.
