Stress, Alcohol, Substance Use, Depression & Suicide in Physicians: The Role of Peer Support in Wellness and Seeking Assistance


This panel session will discuss physician stress, substance use, depression and suicide and present obstacles faced when seeking assistance. An overview will be shared of the role of peer support in breaking down barriers to self care and seeking assistance.Personal accounts, experiences and impacts will be shared by the panelists. 

The participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the rate of burnout, depression, alcohol and substance use disorders in physicians.
  2. Identify strategies to differentiate depression or anxiety from symptoms of stress.
  3. Discuss the diagnosis of alocohol or substance use disorders.
  4. Understand the role of peer support in destigmatizing mental health and substance problems, helping physicians to seek early assistance before mental health or substance problems adversely impact professional work.

The New York State Osteopathic Medical Society (NYSOMS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic medical education to physicians. NYSOMS designates this program for a maximum of 2.0 AOA Category 1-A CME credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity.
