Description

The world of viruses is ever evolving. Dr. Karen Lewis covers newly developed vaccines and proposed updates to vaccination schedules.

Objectives:

  • Interpret the indications for use of the new Herpes Zoster subunit vaccine
  • Distinguish when a third dose of MMR vaccine is recommended
  • Assess which vaccines are needed for a patient with asplenia, a non-functioning spleen, or who will be receiving a splenectomy

Karen Lewis, MD, FAAP received her medical degree at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. She completed a pediatric residency at the Phoenix Hospitals Affiliated Pediatric Program and completed a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at the UCLA School of Medicine. Dr. Lewis is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric infectious diseases and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. For fifteen years she worked in Phoenix hospitals as a pediatric infectious disease consultant before joining the Arizona Department of Health Services in 2003. Dr. Lewis is the Medical Director of the Arizona Department of Health Services’ Immunization Program Office.
