Description

This session reviews the major classes of psychiatric drugs, major representative drugs in each category, and the application of information learned from patient cases. New-to-market medications will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Explain how to approach non-compliance with psychiatric patients.
  2. Review the major classes of psychiatric drugs, including new-to-market medications.
  3. Describe the appropriate use and follow-up mechanisms for psychiatric drugs.
  4. Apply knowledge of the management of side-effects of major classes of psychiatric medications.

Accreditation Statement:
The Georgia Osteopathic Medical Association is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians and designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity.

Grievance Policy:
All grievances should be in writing and should specify the nature of the grievance.  Initially, all grievances should be directed to GOMA’s Executive Director, who will then forward said grievance to the CME Planning Committee.  All grievances will receive an initial response in writing within 30 days of receipt.  If the participant does not receive a satisfactory response, then they can then submit a complaint in writing to the Bureau of Osteopathic Education of the AOA at 142 East Ontario Street, Chicago, IL 60611.

Dr. Smith is an Associate Professor and Chief of Psychiatry at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and a Founding Psychiatry Residency Program Director at Portsmouth Regional Hospital's new GME program affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Smith is a board certified Psychiatrist by the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. 

Dr. Smith worked as the sole psychiatrist in Washington County, Maine, for five years before pursuing other opportunities. He is currently clinically active at the State Psychiatric Hospital in Concord, New Hampshire. He serves on the Maine Board of Osteopathic Licensure and is the Clerkship Director of Psychiatry for the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Smith has spoken nationally and at several regional educational programs in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine.

Dr. Smith discloses that he received a speaker fee for being a promotional speaker for Otsuka-Lundbeck, Incorporated.
