Description

The goal of this lecture is to understand the evolution of pain management, treatment with opioids, overdose epidemic, and currently accepted be practices for treating patients.

The Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians and designates this program for a maximum of 2.0 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity.

Jolene Smith is a pain medicine physician who is board certified in both pain medicine and anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Smith's professional interests include interventions such as spinal cord stimulation, intrathecal pump placement, and cannabinoids. She is firmly committed to educating students, colleagues, and the community about pain management. She has successfully spearheaded an initiative at Mercy Hospital to create a lecture series about pain management. She is an adjunct professor at DMU and has codeveloped an elective course for health professions students about pain management and addiction medicine.


Karry Smith, PhD, MPH's Profile

Karry Smith, PhD, MPH Related Seminars and Products


Dr. Karry Smith earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree and a PhD in Cell Biology from the University of Iowa. She has worked in the pharmaceutical industry since 2014 and is currently an Associate Director of Oncology Medical Writing at Merck. In 2019, Dr. Smith earned a graduate certificate in cannabinoid pharmacology from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

Dr. Smith has longstanding interests in pain medicine, addiction, opioids, and the patient voice. To that end, she is currently pursuing a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree at Johns Hopkins in Health Policy and Management and will to focus her research on patient reported outcomes in the context of multiple sclerosis. She is passionate about education and is currently co-teaching a special topics course to healthcare students at Des Moines University that focuses on pain management and associated issues.
