Learning Objectives:

Dementia: Types and Treatment

  • Discuss cognitive continuum and describe Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)
  • Describe major types of dementia with focus on Lewy Body (DLB) and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD)
  • Discuss the future of assessment –dementia biomarkers
  • Current and future treatments

 

Nursing Home Management with an Emphasis on Behavior and Safety

  • Identify barriers to a resident’s peaceful existence in a long term care setting.
  • Discuss the role of the ancillary staff in providing a safe environment for their residents
  • Understand the risks and benefits of pharmaceutical management of disruptive patient behaviors
  • Lament the psychosocial and medical toll that the novel coronavirus pandemic has taken on long term care residents and staff.

 

The Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians and designates this program for a maximum of 2 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity.

Yogesh Shah, M.D., MPH, FAAFP Related Seminars and Products


Dr.Yogi Shah is the Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs for Broadlawns Medical Center. Dr. Shah joined the organization in September 2016 and served as a geriatrician in the Broadlawns Geriatric and Memory Center for his first three years with the Broadlawns. Prior to joining the medical staff at Broadlawns, he served as the Associate Dean of Global Health at Des Moines University and was the founding physician for the Des Moines University Memory Clinic.

Dr. Shah received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Bombay University in India. He completed his residency training in Family Medicine with the Mercy Mayo Residency Program, and he earned his Geriatric Fellowship from the Mayo Clinic where he worked on Mild Cognitive Impairment. He is triple-board-certified in Family Medicine, Geriatrics, Hospice and Palliative Care. Dr. Shah holds a Masters in Public Health from Des Moines University.

Dr. Peter Hoftiezer, DO's Profile

Peter K. Hoftiezer DO, FAAFP practices in Chariton, Iowa. After obtaining a Bachelor of Sciencein Molecular Genetics from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, he completed his undergraduate medical training at A T Still University’s Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He remained in Kirksville, Missouri where he completed his familymedicine residency training at Northeast Regional Medical Center. He then completed his Geriatrics Fellowship at Millcreek Community Hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania and subsequently earned a Master’s in Medical Education through the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He enjoys lecturing for the medical students in Kirksville and teaches there one day a week in the family medicine residency program.
