Join MAOPS President Dr. Michael Brown as he explores recent discoveries in the history of the Osteopathic profession with Museum Director Jason Haxton.  Together, they will discuss the impact these discoveries ha ve had on the Osteopathic profession.

Webinar Objectives:
•    Dr. AT Still used American Indian (Shawnee Tribe) language in his book dedication and writings. Participants will learn about and see examples and how Dr. Still viewed his ancestry/genetic heritage.
•    Orthotics are common today – participants will learn of their osteopathic origins.
•    Program participants will learn how the AACOM and AOA power structure was established in the early 1900’s.
•    Participants will understand the events that lead to Osteopathic Research – the AT Still Research Institute.
•    Abraham Flexner changed American Medical Education with his 1909 Report and evaluation of USA and Canadian Medical Schools. Participants will understand how this affected and created the DO Mission.
•    Importance of anatomy in a solid medical education. DO excelled in dissection.
•    Once common Osteopathic Hospital are all but gone. Participants will learn why they were created and lead to their demise.
•    Participants will learn of the Sports Medicine origins in osteopathic healthcare.
•    Participants will learn about European Osteopathic Organizations and OsEAN curriculum standards.

Accreditation Statement:
Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians.  MAOPS designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A CME credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation.

Grievance Policy:

Dr. Michael Brown is a graduate of AT Still University - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. He completed a medical residency in Family and Community Medicine at Truman Medical Centers in Kansas City, Missouri. He currently works full-time for Meritas Health in Smithville, Missouri, where he practices Family Medicine. He is the former Assistant Chief Medical Informatics Officer and Medical Director of Telemedicine for Mosaic Life Care. He is board certified in Family Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine and Clinical Informatics by the American Board of Preventative Medicine.

Dr. Brown was the first physician to begin providing direct-to-consumer telemedicine in Missouri. He built a team of providers who continue to give care remotely to patients throughout rural northwest Missouri. His interests include innovative ways to deliver health care to his patients and increasing physician satisfaction with electronic health records.

Dr. Brown lives in Smithville, Missouri, with his wife and seven children and continues his family tradition of beekeeping. He also enjoys photography and running, two beneficial skills for any beekeeper. Dr. Brown will be ending his term as President of MAOPS in the next month. His leadership during this challenging year in dealing with the pandemic has been instrumental as MAOPS switched its CME focus to virtual learning.

Museum of Osteopathic Medicine


Jason Haxton, MA, DO (h.c.) has been the director of the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine since January 2001. Besides managing the Museum that was created in 1934, he makes multiple international trips each year (Belgium, Russia, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Brazil and the UK) to provide lectures, historic research materials and promote the principles of osteopathic medicine through exhibits for osteopaths globally.  At A.T. Still University in Kirksville he keeps a busy schedule teaching medical students and welcoming guests from around the world to the museum. His leadership at the Museum was recognized as an American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Shining STAR organization for its work promoting the osteopathic profession worldwide.
