Join MAOPS President Dr. Michael Brown as he explores past challenges of the Osteopathic profession with Jason Haxton, Director of ATSU Museum of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. Together they will discuss the impact these issues had and how the Osteopathic profession may learn from them today. 

Learning Objectives:
• Explain what the physician learner will change in terms of competence, performance, or patient outcomes.
• Direct others to the aspects of Mind-Spirit in the definition of osteopathic healthcare by Founder A.T. Still.
• Trace the historical introduction of mental health into the overall idea of Whole Person healthcare. 
• Understand the importance of the physician-patient relationship, trust, and support.

Accreditation Statements:
The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. MAOPS designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation.

Grievance Policy:

Dr. Michael Brown is a graduate of AT Still University - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. He completed a medical residency in Family and Community Medicine at Truman Medical Centers in Kansas City, Missouri. He currently works full-time for Meritas Health in Smithville, Missouri, where he practices Family Medicine. He is the former Assistant Chief Medical Informatics Officer and Medical Director of Telemedicine for Mosaic Life Care. He is board certified in Family Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine and Clinical Informatics by the American Board of Preventative Medicine.

Dr. Brown was the first physician to begin providing direct-to-consumer telemedicine in Missouri. He built a team of providers who continue to give care remotely to patients throughout rural northwest Missouri. His interests include innovative ways to deliver health care to his patients and increasing physician satisfaction with electronic health records.

Dr. Brown lives in Smithville, Missouri, with his wife and seven children and continues his family tradition of beekeeping. He also enjoys photography and running, two beneficial skills for any beekeeper. Dr. Brown will be ending his term as President of MAOPS in the next month. His leadership during this challenging year in dealing with the pandemic has been instrumental as MAOPS switched its CME focus to virtual learning.

Jason Haxton's Profile

Museum of Osteopathic Medicine


Jason Haxton, MA, DO (h.c.) has been the director of the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine since January 2001. Besides managing the Museum that was created in 1934, he makes multiple international trips each year (Belgium, Russia, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Brazil and the UK) to provide lectures, historic research materials and promote the principles of osteopathic medicine through exhibits for osteopaths globally.  At A.T. Still University in Kirksville he keeps a busy schedule teaching medical students and welcoming guests from around the world to the museum. His leadership at the Museum was recognized as an American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Shining STAR organization for its work promoting the osteopathic profession worldwide.
