Dr. Carlisle Holland received his medical degree from Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1977 and is board certified in Family Practice with a special proficiency certification in osteopathic manipulation. Dr. Holland chaired a national committee on credentials in osteopathic technique for the American Academy of Osteopathy from 1988 to 1997 and is a member of the Bureau of Experts for the Osteopathic Profession.
He is an internationally recognized authority on the use of osteopathic manipulation in the treatment of children as well as treatment of injuries to the head, nervous system and musculoskeletal system, and has over thirty years of clinical experience treating neurological disorders and complex medical conditions.
Dr. Kathleen Drinan graduated from the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy prior to entering the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine where she earned her DO Degree. She completed her Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology fellowship at the Chicago Osteopathic Medical Centers, where she joined the academic practice of cardiology. Dr. Drinan subsequently transitioned to private practice in the Chicago area, where she continues to enjoy her practice of Clinical Cardiology. Dr. Drinan is a Fellow in the American College of Osteopathic Internists and is also a Fellow in the American College of Cardiology. She has completed additional training in Echocardiography and Lipidology and has been recognized as a Diplomat in the National Board of Echocardiography and a Clinical Lipid Specialist in the American Board of Clinical Lipidology.
Dr. Mark Baldwin graduated from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences – College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1983. He completed a rotating internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine – Midwestern University and a fellowship in Renal Disease and Hypertension at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Baldwin is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine and as a Medical Examiner by the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. He is also certified as a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension by the American Society of Hypertension.
During his twenty-plus years in private practice in Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Baldwin was actively involved in all medical education levels. He developed and taught the renal curriculum at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine for fifteen years. Dr. Baldwin is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine in Yakima, Washington. He is involved in research on chronic kidney disease in agricultural workers and has received numerous teaching awards.

Jonathan Betlinski, M.D., is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University, and Director of the Division of Public Psychiatry. Among other projects, he serves as Medical Director for the Oregon Psychiatric Access Line about Adults, as a Lead Faculty for the Oregon ECHO Network, as Program Committee Chair for the Oregon Psychiatric Physicians Association, and as a certified trainer for adult and youth Mental Health First Aid.
William J. Elliott, M.D., Ph.D. is Professor of Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pharmacology, Chief of the Division of Pharmacology, and Chair of The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima, WA. After receiving the B.S. (summa cum laude) from the University of Notre Dame, he earned the M.D. and Ph.D. (in Bio-Organic Chemistry) from the University of Chicago. He trained in Internal Medicine and Pharmacology at Barnes Hospital and Washington University—St. Louis, and served as a member of the faculty of the University of Chicago from 1985-92. During the next 17 years at RUSH Medical College, he practiced, taught and did research on cardiovascular clinical pharmacology, focusing on epidemiologic studies of risk factors (including diagonal earlobe creases), laboratory investigations, federally-funded cooperative clinical trials, and many industry-supported endeavors, serving as principal investigator for about 200 clinical trials of new drugs. Dr. Elliott holds Board Certification in both Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology. One of the inaugural “Specialists in Clinical Hypertension” and Fellows of the American Society of Hypertension, he contributed on five topics to JNC VI, as well as to the “long version” of JNC 7. Some of his recent publications include meta-analyses of clinical trial results, putative risk factors for cardiovascular disease, cost-containment, pharmacoeconomics, and the assessment and enhancement of medication adherence. Dr. Elliott belongs to many professional societies interested in clinical pharmacology and in hypertension, including fellowship in the American Heart Association’s High Blood Pressure Council. He has lectured on five continents, participated in the review process for many journals, societies, study sections, and funding agencies, and served as editor or co-editor for many books, monographs, and symposia. Among his honors are 29 awards for teaching excellence.

Dr. Kevin Miller was born on Eglan Airforce Base in Florida, and grew up on many different bases in the mid-west and east coast. Inspired by his grandfather’s example of professionalism and caring, he chose to pursue medicine, graduating from Oral Roberts University in 1991, then going on to Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine where he did an additional year fellowship in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. After graduation in 1996, he completed a residency at Ohio University. “Being a physician allows me to serve people in need through science and compassionate care,” says Dr. Miller.
After his wife, Dr. Eden Miller, a native Oregonian, finished her training in Portland, she suggested the family look for an opportunity to move to Central Oregon and High Lakes provided that opportunity. “We have enjoyed seeing the wonderful people of Sisters for 10 years. The combination of great people, natural beauty and wonderful opportunity for raising healthy children have kept us enjoying our practice.”
Dr. Miller is a current board member of the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons Board. He is the past President of OPSO and American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians of Oregon and is also the current president of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians of Oregon. He has served as a delegate on the AOA board of delegates representing Oregon at this yearly meeting in Chicago. He was also serves on the Governor's Board of Rural Health.

Yazen Joudeh, MD completed his medical training at Louisiana State University School of Medicine, New Orleans, LA, and a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, & Obesity Medicine. Dr. Joudeh is the medical director at the Center for Adult & Pediatric Wellness in Orland Park, IL and is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Physician Assistant Program at Midwestern University College of Health Sciences in Downers Grove, IL. Clinical interests include: diabetes, prediabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity medicine, nutrition support for medical disease, & migraines.
Teresa Martin is a mother of 3 children and lives in Bend, OR. She is also a Registered Dietitian with over 29 years of experience in the field of nutrition including clinical nutrition, community nutrition, diabetes research and most currently as a diabetes educator for Novo Nordisk. Over the last 16 years, Teresa has specialized in the field of diabetes and as a Certified Diabetes Educator; she helps individuals with diabetes gain the skills they need to better manage their diabetes so they can live the life they want to live and she helps healthcare professionals get the resources and training they need to provide quality, compassionate diabetes care. Teresa was recently recognized for her work by the American Association of Diabetes Educators of Oregon when she received the Diabetes Educator of the Year 2017 and Distinguished Service Award 2015. Teresa was an All-American Volleyball Player and All-American Alpine Ski Racer in College and continues to stay active playing competitive beach volleyball. Teresa values utilizing the outdoors, mindfulness, and the power of communities to help individuals find their path to a healthier, happier life.
Dr. Shubrook’s professional work and passion focuses on preparing the primary care workforce to better manage diabetes and optimizing the prevention and treatment of diabetes. After 10 years in primary care, he completed a Diabetes Management Fellowship and has been focusing on care of the patient with diabetes ever since. He served as the Director of an integrated comprehensive diabetes care center and also as the Director of Clinical Research at both Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (HCOM) and, more recently, Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine. He served a the Director of the Diabetes Fellowship Program for Primary Care Physicians at HCOM and looks forward to expanding this training opportunity to new professionals and a new institution. Dr. Shubrook still advises the program at HCOM and serves on a national ad hoc committee of American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists on implementing primary care diabetes training even more broadly. He has served in a number of national roles such as Chair of the Primary Care Advisory Group of the American Diabetes Association and the Chair of the Research Committee of the Guidelines Advantage, collaboration between the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and the American Diabetes Association. Dr. Shubrook has been NCQA certified throughout his time as a Diabetologist and has helped each of our Fellows achieve this honor.
Having served in both primary care and specialist roles, he is acutely aware of the gaps in the health care system that lead to fragmented and poorly-coordinated and executed care. Further, having been active in measuring quality of care, he is accustomed and very knowledgeable of the clinical shortcomings of clinical practice self-assessment.
Michael H. Shannon, MD, is an endocrinologist and Medical Director with Physicians of Southwest Washington, an Independent Practice Association managing Medicare Advantage and ACO contracts, in Olympia, Washington. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Washington. He serves on the Editorial Board of Clinical Diabetes, and he is the Chair of the Professional Education Committee for the Washington chapter of the American Diabetes Association.
He served as the System Endocrinology Lead and Chair of the Endocrine/Diabetes Clinical Advancement Team for Providence St. Joseph Health, a 51-hospital integrated health system, from 2011-2018. He served as the Medical Director for his region’s Accountable Care Network, dedicated to quality metrics and reductions in the total cost of care.
Dr. Shannon graduated from medical school at the University of California, San Diego, and then he went on to perform an internal medicine residency, geriatrics fellowship, and endocrinology fellowship at the University of Washington.
Dr. Eden Miller, an Osteopathic board certified Family Practitioner, received her medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1997. Returning to the Northwest, she completed her residency in family practice at Eastmoreland Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Upon completion, she joined High Lakes Heath Care in Bend, Oregon, where she shares a practice with husband Dr. Kevin Miller.
Over the past 15 years, Dr. Miller has cultivated a special interest in diabetes, after contracting type-1 diabetes while in medical school. Out of that personal experience, her practice has extended into a subspecialty in diabetes care. An impassioned speaker, Dr. Miller has given over 600 lectures in the field of diabetes to health care providers and patients alike, on subjects such as Diabetes Management, Insulin Pump Therapy, Clinical Research, and Healthcare Policy. Her adage for care is that she “only succeeds as a provider if she turns patients into experts on their own disease”. Dr. Miller believes that a physiologic patient individualized approach to diabetes intervention is crucial to success. She feels if our nation is to triumph over the ravages of diabetes, a collaborative effort; unhindered by fear of personal scrutiny, and barriers for effective treatment need to be removed. For her, Diabetes Nation provides the foundational model to impact the people that represent this disease, and begin the process of restoring hope back to their lives. Dr Miller and her husband keep busy with their two children enjoying the wonderful central Oregon outdoors while snowboarding, boating and playing basketball.
Thomas L. Ely, DO, FACOFP, FAAFP, was inaugurated as the 124th president of the American Osteopathic Association on July 18, 2020.
President Ely is an AOA board-certified osteopathic family physician and fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and the American Academy of Family Physicians. A member of the AOA since 1980, Dr. Ely was elected to the AOA’s Board of Trustees in 2006 and has been a delegate representing Tennessee in the AOA’s House of Delegates since 1998.
Dr. Ely is past president of the Tennessee Osteopathic Medical Association and a member of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. He was appointed to the Tennessee Board of Osteopathic Examination (licensure board) for 9 years.
Prior to attending what is now the Kansas City (Missouri) University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Ely served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps, which included two combat tours in Vietnam, serving as a “Dustoff” medical evacuation pilot. Following osteopathic medical school, he re-entered the military as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and completed a family medicine internship and residency at DeWitt Army Community Hospital in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He retired from the Army in 1988 with the rank of lieutenant colonel and went into private practice as a family physician in Clarksville, Tennessee, and subsequently served as the chief medical officer for the Gateway Medical Center in Clarksville from 2002 to 2015.

Patrick Boyle, M.D. currently serves as Professor of Physician Assistant Studies at Pacific University in Hillsboro, Oregon where he heads up Pharmacology and Endocrinology education. Dr. Boyle obtained his Bachelor of Science from the University of Oregon, his Doctor of Medicine from OHSU, and then completed his residency (and Chief Residency) in Internal Medicine at OHSU. After finishing a three year fellowship in Endocrinology at Washington University in St. Louis, he served 22 years as a Professor of Medicine at the University of New Mexico where he was funded by the National Institutes of Health and served eight years as the Program Director of the NIH funded General Clinical Research Center. During these years, he served as a principle investigator for the landmark Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, and the Diabetes Prevention Program. After returning to Oregon in 2011, he provided Endocrine consultation for five years in Depoe Bay with Samaritan Health System.
Dr. Gutierrez is a dynamic and inspirational speaker who has presented for healthcare professionals, New Thought Churches, and educational groups in the western US. He is the author of several books on health: Three Steps to Superior Health and L.O.V.E.S. The Answer. He currently resides in Eugene, OR where he has a private practice in Family Medicine and Integrative Holistic Medicine. He is the current President of the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Oregon and Regional Assistant Dean for Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences. He is passionate about teaching and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at both Western University and PNWU.
Dr. Gutierrez completed training at the renowned Mayo Clinic for 3 years after completing active duty in the United States Navy during the Iraq War. As a Family Medicine Resident at Mayo Clinic Florida, he presented original research on exceptional longevity and nutrition internationally. The Florida Academy of Family Physicians awarded him its Distinguished Scholar Award in 2009.
Dr. Gutierrez graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2003 with honors. While studying osteopathic medicine, he instructed a weekly yoga class for students, faculty, and staff. His undergraduate degree in 1999, is Magna Cum Laude with a double major in Philosophy and Biology from Florida International University.
Dr. Gutierrez shares a holistic lifestyle with his wife and their three children. His healthy habits include a plant-based diet, daily meditation and yoga, and participating in his spiritual community. His family has been Unity members for 13 years and his wife is currently President of the Board of Unity of the Valley. He is a competitive runner and All American track athlete. As a Cuban refugee who came to America on the Mariel boatlift, he is the first in his family to attend college and truly enjoys connecting with people from all walks of life.
Christina Kim is a second year medical student at Western University of Health Sciences, COMP-Northwest. She graduated from Elmira College in Elmira, NY in 2016, where she completed her bachelor's degree double majoring in Biology and Biochemistry. A Pacific Northwesterner at heart, she returned to Seattle, WA after graduating to scribe in the Swedish Ballard Emergency Department where she first fell in love with emergency medicine. In 2018, Christina received the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) and was commissioned into the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. She plans to pursue a career in emergency medicine, and is excited for all the opportunities that await her in military medicine. At COMP-Northwest, Christina is currently serving as president of Sigma Sigma Phi, the osteopathic honor society, as well as co-president for both the Military Medical Student Association and Sports Medicine Club. Some of her non-medical school hobbies include brewing homemade kombucha, hiking, and listening to podcasts.
Currently a second-year medical student at Western University of Health Sciences COMP-Northwest. A father of 4 and married for 10 years. Marcus has been involved in EMS since 2007 and this was his inspiration for going to medical school. Marcus has been a paramedic since 2011, where he mostly worked rural and reservation EMS. He also has experience as a SWAT medic, flight medic, and paramedic instructor. He plans to pursue Emergency Medicine with a focus on rural medicine and EMS.
William “Cooper” Procter Maloney grew up on a small apple farm in Northern California. He found an interest in medicine due to frequent hospital visits from sporting injuries and his three older brothers. In the San Francisco East Bay, he attended Saint Mary’s College of California to study Biology and play Division 1 Rugby. He now attends Western University of Health Sciences School of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific Northwest as a second year medical student in the US ARMY.
William Crowley is a second-year student at Western University of Health Science, COMP-Northwest in Lebanon, Oregon. William was born and raised in Ashland, Oregon and went to the University of Oregon earning a degree in Chemistry, B.S 2017. As a Navy Health Professions Scholarship Program Student, William is currently interested in a variety of specialties; emergency medicine and family practice. In his free time, William likes to run and make art; primarily oil painting, currently he has art on display at a restaurant Umami Sushi in Ashland, Oregon. He also enjoys travel, especially to see family in South Korea.
Jordan Burr is a third-year osteopathic medical student at A.T. Still University, School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona. She graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences in 2016. Born and raised in Papillion, Nebraska, she traded out the amber waves of grain for the Arizona desert in late 2016. Upon graduation, she worked as a pharmacy technician and set off to travel, living in Ireland for a brief period of time. She’s always been fascinated by the human body and the art of conversation. She strives to continue incorporating the osteopathic philosophy throughout her career as a physician. In her free time, you can find her cuddled up with a good book, exploring the outdoors or trying out a new recipe in the kitchen.
Jenny Wu is a third-year osteopathic medical student at A.T. Still University, School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona. She has always had a special interest in preventative and lifestyle medicine and would like to incorporate this interest in improving the health of patients of all ages. Her education at A.T. Still University has given her very meaningful opportunities of working in various community health centers, where she has seen the importance and impact of addressing not only patients’ physical health, but also their mental health, as well any barriers preventing them from accessing health care. She seeks to continue incorporating this osteopathic philosophy in the future as a primary care physician. In her spare time, Jenny enjoys catching up on all things sports. She also enjoys being outdoors, running, hiking, and being by the water.
Brittney Banfer is a second-year medical student at Western University of Health Sciences, COMP Northwest in Lebanon, OR. Brittney graduated with a B.S. in Biological Sciences and went onto work as a medical scribe of a level II trauma center, where she ultimately fell in love with the fast-paced environment of the emergency department. Brittney later went onto pursue a graduate degree from the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont. Upon graduation, she returned home to San Diego, CA where she worked as a research coordinator in stem cell regenerative therapies for spinal cord injury, before attending medical school. In her free time, Brittney loves to spend time with family and friends, camp, hike, and run with her two dogs.
Rory King, OMSII grew up in Washington, Missouri and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Saint Louis University in 2012. His research experience began at SLU with a senior project in urban ecology under the direction of Dr. Gerardo Camillo. After graduation, King worked in agricultural labs preforming NextGen Sequencing, ELISA assay, and rtPCR - optimizing these techniques for different crops in highly automated, high-throughput labs. In 2014, Rory left agricultural benchwork and took a position as a cell sorter operator in the Sitemann Cancer Center Flow Core at Washington University School of Medicine. There, he assisted researchers in Hematology-Oncology by optimizing their sort parameters and performing flow analysis.
Currently, Rory King is studying the affects of neurotoxins on human neural development in Dr. Kisby’s Lab as part of the Research Longitudinal Track. He is an Air Force Health Professions Scholarship recipient and in his spare time enjoys alpine climbing, running, and skiing with his wife.
Elizabeth Fearey is a second-year student at Western University of Health Sciences, COMP-Northwest. She was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and received her Bachelors of Arts degree through Oregon State University’s online program while living in Germany. After her time abroad Elizabeth returned to the Northwest to complete a Masters degree in Teaching German, and taught German at Portland State University. After several years of teaching, Elizabeth returned to school to pursue her first love, medicine. From 2015-2018 Elizabeth completed the necessary science prerequisites while working as a cardiology technician. In her free time, she enjoys trailing running with her husband and fur-child Otis, swimming at the local pool while catching up on crime podcasts, and serving as a Board Member for the Lagotto Romagnolo Dog Rescue, Inc.

Josh Bezecny is a second year medical student at Western University of Health Sciences, COMP-Northwest. He completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO in 2006 majoring in Integrative Physiology. He went on to graduate from Rocky Mountain College in Billings, MT in 2010 where he completed his master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies. He practiced as a physician assistant for seven years in both subacute rehabilitation, long-term-care and family practice before beginning his next big chapter as a osteopathic medical student at COMP-NW in 2018. Josh has a passion for medicine and hopes to specialize in Dermatology. He is currently the president of the Dermatology Interest Group. In his free time, Josh loves to spend time with his wife and two boys. His other major passion is mountain biking and he has raced professionally for the past 18 years.
Steven Gay is a second year medical student at Western University of Health Sciences, COMP-Northwest. He graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah where he completed a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. He and his beautiful wife, Erin, have been married for 6 years and are expecting their first child any day now. At COMP-Northwest, Steven is in the Global Health track and is currently serving as Treasurer of Sigma Sigma Phi, the osteopathic honor society, the Student Osteopathic Medical Association, the Specialties club and as co-president of the orthopedic surgery interest group. Some of his other interests include traveling, eating/cooking, gymnastics, acrobatic dunking, and photography

INTERESTS: Triathlon, long-distance running, language learning, and hopefully one day orthopedic surgery.
Rachel Gantz was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin into a career military family and has five brothers. Outdoor activities and sports were prominent yet, there was always time to volunteer and give back to inner city Milwaukee community. She graduated Sigma Cum Laude from Winona State University, Minnesota in 2018 with a degree in Chemistry and minor in Biochemistry. During her time at Winona, she continued to volunteer to help the underserved at the St Joseph’s Free Medical Clinic, Make a Wish Foundation and the local food bank. She also was the Captain of the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Team and was Academic All-Conference.
She is now working on her Medical Degree at Western University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific Northwest and plans to be a physician in the Air Force upon graduation. In addition to her studies, Rachel has worked in clinical and bench research, tutoring students and volunteering to serve the community in the local Free Medical Clinic as well as teaching tennis at Albany Tennis Center.
Preston Danielson is a second-year medical student at Western University of Health Sciences, COMP-Northwest and an Army Health Professions Scholarship recipient. He graduated from Brigham Young University, UT in 2018 with a major in Exercise Science and a minor in Nutritional Science. Currently, Preston spends time as a member of the COMP-Northwest Biomedical and Clinical Research Track and is a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America. In his spare time, Preston enjoys going on walks with his wife and reading to his two daughters.
Luke Smith is a second-year medical student at Western University of Health Sciences, COMP-Northwest. He graduated from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln with High Distinction with a major in Biochemistry and minors in Chemistry and Mathematics. He is a member of the COMP-Northwest Biomedical and Clinical Research Track and serves as President of the COMP-NW chapter of Students for a National Health Program. In his free time, Luke enjoys exploring the outdoors and playing soccer.
