Description

OMT for the Post-Operative Patient
This presentation will focus on the benefits of OMM in the post-operative patient. As discussion on the physiological benefits and improved recovery after major surprise procedures will be discussed.

Objectives:
1. Present osteopathic principles and practices post-op
2. Discuss the physiological benefits of OMM and recovery
3. Discuss/present clinical outcomes with OMM


Naloxone for Opioid Overdose
This session will describe the role of naloxone in opioid overdose prevention and will explore strategies to maximize its use.

Objectives:
1. Describe the role of naloxone in opioid overdose prevention
2. Identify risk factors for increased risk of death related to opioid overdose
3. Discuss best practices in the treatment of substance abuse disorder
4. Review Texas’ Standing Order for Pharmacists
5. Discuss strategies to increase disbursement of naloxone

Statement of Accreditation
The Texas Osteopathic Medical Association (TOMA) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. TOMA designates is program for a maximum of 2 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Albert H. Yurvati, DO, PhD, FACOS, FICS, FAHA, is a 1986 graduate of the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine.  He completed his Internship and General Surgery residency at Tulsa Regional Medical Center at Tulsa, Oklahoma, and served as Chief Resident his final year.  He then completed a residency in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at the Deborah Heart and Lung Center, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Browns Mills, New Jersey, where he also served as chief resident. He is AOA board certified in Cardiothoracic-Vascular and General Surgery, and he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons as well as the International College of Surgeons. 

He completed a PhD in Education with a concentration of Organizational Leadership from Northcentral University. Other educational activities include a Graduate Certificate from the University of North Texas Toulouse School Of Education in Teaching and Adult Learning. 

Currently, Dr. O-Yurvati is a tenured DSWOP Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Medical Education at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, and he is a Professor of Integrative Physiology in the Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease.  In addition, he is an Adjunct Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of North Texas at Denton.  He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde, in Glasgow, Scotland, in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

He has received numerous awards from the UNTHSC, including the 2012 Clyde Gallehugh DO Memorial Award, the 2011 President’s Award for Clinical Excellence.  He also received Doctor of Philanthropy in 2011, and in 2010, he was the recipient of both the Benjamin L. Cohen Award for Outstanding Research Achievement and the TCOM’s Dean’s Award for Philanthropy.  In addition, he received the Academic Commendation of Excellence (ACE) Award for superior post-tenure review.

Dr. O-Yurvati has served on many committees on the local, state, and national level. He is Past President of the Metro Fort Worth American Heart Association.  He also received the AHA Distinguished Service Award.  On a national level, Dr. O-Yurvati is the Executive Director of the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery.  He is actively involved in numerous committees of the ACOS, and he has served as a discipline chair and representative to the Board of Governors, as well as cardiothoracic educational program director.  In 2013, he received the highest award from the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons the Orel F Martin Medal. In 2016, he received the ACOS Guy D Beaumont Education Award.

He is on the editorial board of multiple journals to include the JAOA and Filtration. He is a reviewer for many peered journals to include Cardiovascular Research and Experimental Biology and Medicine, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and the JAOA

Dr. Yurvati has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles, three book chapters, and numerous abstracts.  He is the recipient of over 2.5 million in grants, to include NIH, NASA, DOD, and Osteopathic Heritage Foundation funding.  He is a Primary Investigator in multiple Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials.  He has lectured nationally and internationally, and he has presented previously at the Therapeutic Filtration and Extracorporeal Circulation meeting at the prestigious Hammersmith Hospital in London, England.  His research interests include the inflammatory effects of cardiopulmonary bypass, cardiac metabolism, mechanical cardiac assist devices, post-cardiac surgery adhesions, and neoplasm of the lung.

Dr. Yurvati is also experienced in graduate medical education as the Designated Institutional Official for Medical City Fort Worth’s eight ACGME accredited programs.

Dr. Jennifer Fix holds a Doctorate in Pharmacy,a BS in Pharmacy, and an MBA.  She brings to the table 30 years of experience in community pharmacy having owned an independent pharmacy in Tarrant County for 25 years.  She is a Past President of both the Texas Pharmacy Association and Tarrant County Pharmacists Association and a recipient of the APhA Good Government Pharmacist of the Year Award for her work on prompt payment of claims to medical providers.  She has also received  the Texas Pharmacy Foundation’s Award for Individual Educational Excellence and the Drake University Outstanding Alumnae Award, as well as many other acknowledgements for her leadership activity.

Her area of interest concerns the development of new and innovative services which pharmacists can provide to patients in the community pharmacy setting.  Advanced professional services that she has delivered include specialty compounding, immunizations, lipid testing and education, A1C testing for diabetes screening and education, strep throat assessment and testing in the community pharmacy setting, and pharmacy technician education.

The development of new and innovative services and teaching both students and established pharmacists how to integrate these services into an advanced practice model are essential. Dr. Fix especially enjoys involvement in the legislative arena where rules, regulations, and infrastructure work to open up new possibilities for pharmacists to expand their service mix beyond dispensing.

Her primary teaching assignment is teaching first year pharmacy students about nonprescription therapies.  She also teaches an advanced compouding elective where students explore human and veterinary opportunities.  Her clinical assignment is with the gastroenterology department at the Healthcare Pavilion where she focuses on curing patients with Hepatitis-C.
