Osteopathic Manipulation in the Emergency Department

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this educational activity, participants will:

  1. Better understand the potential benefits and limitations of OMM use in the ED.
  2. Build knowledge to identify patients that would potentially benefit from OMM in the ED.
  3. Better understand contraindications to use OMM in the ED.

Accreditation Statement:

The New York State Osteopathic Medical Society (NYSOMS)  is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. NYSOMS designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A CME credits and will report CME credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation.

Dr. Burgess is currently an emergency medicine attending physician and emergency ultrasound fellow at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. He completed his emergency medicine residency training at Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York. Prior to that he completed his undergraduate medical education at UNECOM in Biddeford Maine including a one year teaching fellowship in OMM, Gross Anatomy, and clinical skills, acting as junior faculty at UNECOM. Outside of medicine, Dr. Burgess enjoys road cycling and spending time with his partner Dr. Caitlin Farrell and their French Bulldog Lucy.
