  • To  get an awareness of the different medicines used and how they can assist patients in weight loss
  • Understand steps that primary care can take to increase weight loss

The Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians and designates this program for a maximum of 2 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity.

Dr. Batra is a family physician who works as a full-time faculty at Mercy Family medicine residency program in Des Moines for last 17 years. He has completed Faculty Development fellowship from University of North Carolina and Masters in Public Health from Des Moines University. He is a Certified Practitioner of functional medicine.


Dr. Batra is interested to treat patients with diverse medical complexities in all age groups using the principles of functional and Integrative medicine. He is actively involved in teaching the art and science of functional and Integrative medicine to the medical students and residents. He has been heading the “Functional Medicine Forum” in Des Moines for the community of holistic minded providers including physicians, chiropractors, Dieticians, Health coaches, acupuncturists, and Naturopathic physicians for last four years.

Kara Thompson, D.O. is a 2002 graduate of Des Moines University.  She completed a family practice residency at Mercy Mayo Family Medicine Residency in Des Moines.  She is board certified by the American Board of Family Physicians and a Diplomat in Obesity Medicine. Dr. Thompson is Associate Dean at Des Moines University and an Obesity Physician at Mercy One.
