Presentation Title: Warm Weather Visits to the Emergency Department in Maine
Presentation Objectives:  By the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to: 1. Discuss diagnosis and management of tick-borne disease found in Maine. 2. Review classification of epidermal exposure common in Maine. 3. Assess the health impact of an invasive species found in towns throughout Maine.

 

Presentation Title: Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker Health in Maine
Presentation Objectives:  By the end of the lecture, attendees will be able to: 1. Describe the barriers to health faced by migrant and seasonal farmworkers in Maine. 2. Understand how structural forces lead to health disparities as well as individual poor health. 3. Reflect on ways to intervene at both individual and systems levels to address root causes of inequity.

 

The Maine Osteopathic Association is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians.The Maine Osteopathic Association designates this program for a maximum of 2.0 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Bio: Cheryl K. Seymour, MD is a full-spectrum family physician practicing and teaching medicine in central Maine. After studying Biomedical Engineering at Duke University, she graduated from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College in 2001. Dr. Seymour completed her family medicine residency at the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center in Lawrence, Massachusetts followed by a fellowship in geriatrics in Maine. She chose to continue living in Maine after fellowship, joining the faculty of the Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency in Augusta. Since 2004, Dr. Seymour has also worked as a staff clinician with the Maine Mobile Health Program, a state-wide mobile FQHC that serves exclusively migrant and seasonal farm-workers. She has served as the medical director of the MMHP for the past ten years. Dr. Seymour received the 2013 Physician Excellence Award from the Maine Primary Care Association for her work to identify and reduce health disparities in the farmworker community.

Joel Kase, DO's Profile

Dr. Joel Kase is an osteopathic physician who throughout his career has been active in clinical practice, administrative operations, advocacy and policy development, and population health and medical education.

Dr. Kase has worked clinically in rural emergency medicine for over a decade, and prior to that, practiced the entire spectrum of osteopathic family medicine, including inpatient hospital and skilled nursing care, home health visits, obstetrics, and osteopathic manipulation.  He is double boarded in Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. 

Dr. Kase currently practices clinical medicine full time. He has most recently served as the Emergency Department Director for the VA Maine Healthcare System. He previously served as the Director of Medical Education for the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Kase serves on the AOA’s Bureau of State Government Affairs, as well as the Bureau of Osteopathic Clinical Education and Research. He is also a Past-President of the Maine Osteopathic Association, and serves as the Chair of the Maine delegation to the AOA House of Delegates.

A graduate of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Kase completed a family medicine residency as well as an academic fellowship in obstetrics through the teaching hospitals of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Additionally, Dr. Kase attended the Harvard School of Public Health, where he completed a Master’s Degree in Public Health with a concentration in Health Care Management and Policy.
