This lecture was presented as part of the 2023 IOA Virtual Spring Update by Dr. Amanda Wright.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the gender shift seen in enrollment in medical school.
  • Describe the increasing diversity seen in medical school classes.
  • Discuss the new priorities facing medical school faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Discuss the new skill sets brought into the classroom in medical schools and the clinical environment.
  • Explore the misalignments between the traditional sysstem of medical education and what medical students want, expect and need to be successful.

Amanda Wright, D.O. Related Seminars and Products


Amanda Wright, DO is the Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine and an Associate Professor of Family Medicine. She directs and oversees all aspects of medical education, ensuring the program fulfills Marian University’s mission, goals and strategic plan. She promotes the advancements of scientific knowledge and scholarship among the faculty, strongly focus on clinical residencies, and is responsible for planning, budgeting, supervising and evaluating personnel and programs within the College and for compliance with accreditation standards.  Prior to joining Marian University, Dr. Wright was associate dean of clinical medicine at the Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine. Prior to that, Dr. Wright was the osteopathic family medicine program director at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria/UnityPoint Health Methodist. Before her transition into academic medicine, Dr. Wright had a full spectrum family medicine practice in Peoria, IL. She continues to practice clinically with local family medicine residency programs and at the Near West Free Clinic.   Dr. Wright received her undergraduate degree in biology and pre-medicine from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, Ind. She earned her doctor of osteopathic medicine degree at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her family medicine residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP).  Medical interests: Women’ health and obstetrics, global medicine, point of care ultrasound, social determinants of health impact on care, LGBTQA advocacy, and the integration of OMT into clinical practice Academic interests: Integrated curricular design, POCUS, quality improvement, team-based learning, and interprofessional education Personal interests: horseback riding, trail running, OrangeTheory, travel, and spending time with family (husband and two sons).
