Discuss statewide/national tobacco statistics & trends including the newest info from the 2020 Surgeon General’s Report

Identify the impact of tobacco use on Covid-19

Describe the key recommendations for providers to use with patients from USPHS Clinical Practice Guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use & Dependence

Apply motivational interviewing techniques while addressing tobacco use with patients.  

Identify the free statewide tobacco cessation referral resources including the NEW virtual group sessions offered by AHEC.

Kelly Henson-Evertz, DNP, RNC-OB, CTTS, NCTTP, earned her DNP at Chatham University, Pittsburgh, PA; MA-NU-Nurse Educator at St. Catherine University, St. Paul, MN; BSN at Metropolitan State University, St. Paul, MN; and her ASN at Nassau Community College, Garden City, NY. She is a certified Inpatient Obstetrical Nurse (RNC-OB), a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist (CTTS), and holds a National Certification in Tobacco Treatment Practice (NCTTP). Dr. Henson-Evertz has held many positions over the course of her 39+-year nursing career, including: staff nurse in Surgical Orthopedics, Post-Partum, Mother-Baby, and Nursery; Perinatal Educator; HIV Counselor; Tobacco Cessation Counselor (for more than two thousand Minnesotans via individual and group sessions); and Nurse Educator. Dr. Henson-Evertz has trained thousands of health professionals and health professions students throughout the United States on treating tobacco and nicotine dependence so that current and future health professionals possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy to treat tobacco dependent patients in practice.
