Description

This program will expire and must be completed by 05/26/24.

In this lecture, Dr. Crandall will help you understand the time-sensitive nature and the initial evaluation and diagnosis of strokes.  She hopes to help physicians understand their critical role in the care and management of stroke patients by helping them become familiar with stroke intervention and by being familiar with the workup of stroke patients in different populations.  She also feels it is important for physicians to become familiar with primary and comprehensive stroke centers near them.

 Objectives:

  • Understand the time-critical nature of stroke
  • Understand initial evaluation and diagnosis of stroke
  • Become familiar with stroke intervention for a potential reversal of neurologic deficits
  • Become familiar with primary and comprehensive stroke centers as they relate to YOUR practice and hospital. Who is YOUR stroke partner?
  • Become familiar with the workup of stroke in different populations
  • Understand YOUR critical role in the care and management of the stroke patient

The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. MAOPS designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation.

Dr. Suzanne Crandall is board certified in Neurology by the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. She recently started working for the Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) in Charleston, West Virginia. She is the Clerkship Director and is beginning the neurology residency program and seeing patients as part of Charleston Area Medical Center Neurology. She previously was a Consulting Neurologist working in General and Vascular Neurology at Saint Luke's Health System's Marion Bloch Neuroscience Institute, located in Kansas City, Missouri. While in Kansas City, she was also the Stroke Director of the Saint Luke's Northland facility, a Primary Stroke Center, and was the Medical Education liaison between the Neurology group and the University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Medicine. She also assisted in medical student and resident training and maintained an active office practice.

Dr. Crandall is an active lecturer for the Neuroscience Institute, speaking at the last three Advances in Neurology and Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease Symposia and the interactive "Brain" presentation in Overland Park, Kansas. In addition, she lectures for the American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists every year on diverse topics, including stroke and spinal cord injury. Her clinical interests include cerebrovascular disease and critical care neurology, as well as clinical research in acute stroke intervention, secondary stroke prevention, and neuroprotection in acute ischemic stroke.

Dr. Crandall previously was a Clinical Assistant Professor at UMKC-SOM, Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, and Saba University. She had performed clinical preceptor work for all three medical schools and actively lectures for the internal medicine and neurology residency programs and the medical student clerkship programs and was honored with Faculty Excellence in Teaching Awards in 2011-12 and 2012-13.

She graduated from Neurology residency through the Saint John's Health System, a member of the Michigan State University Consortium for Medical Training in 2009, after graduating Summa Cum Laude from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 2005. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Exercise Physiology from Chapman University in Orange, California. She received the University's highest honors, the Cheverton Trophy, and the Ronald Huntington Academic Award. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music – Liberal Arts degree from California State University, Fullerton.

When not working, she enjoys reading, gardening, beekeeping, and volunteering.
