This presentation will briefly review the different types of pain and patient responses to pain, as well as recognize the mechanism of actions of commonly used medications for pain. A focus on assisting the primary care physician choose therapies wisely for their patient will be maintained. Finally, there will be a comparison between the 2016 and 2022 CDC guidelines for prescribing opioids, with an eye towards ethical treatment of chronic pain patients.

The opioid crisis and an epidemic of chronic pain affects an estimated 100 million Americans. With recent initiatives to change prescribing practices, new models for treating pain need to be explored and considered. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has issued new requirements for new and renewing DEA licenses starting on June 27, 2023 and physicians will need to complete continuing Medical Education credits to comply with these requirements.
