Hwyda A. Arafat, MD, PhD, MSc. MEdL


Dr. Arafat completed her residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Clinical Pathology at Ain Shams University Hospitals in Cairo, Egypt. She received a master’s degree in histopathology and Biochemistry and her PhD in Cell Biology and Immunology from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Arafat completed her postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania. She was recruited to the faculty at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and had a successful research and teaching career. She joined UNE COM at the end of 2013 as a Clinical Professor. Dr. Arafat obtained a master’s in Medical Education Leadership from UNE in 2017. At COM, in addition to teaching in the Medical Knowledge and Clinical Skills courses, she is leading the efforts to integrate equity and diversity in the medical school curriculum through her role as the co-chair of the dean’s advisory committee on diversity and inclusion.
