Sofia Funes, DO, MPH


Sofia Funes, DO is a 2016 graduate of NSU-KPCOM. Sofia A. Funes, DO, MPH received her undergraduate degree from the University of Florida in 2012, and her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2016. During her time at NSU, Dr. Funes completed a pre-doctoral fellowship in Anatomy and served as the president of the International Medical Outreach Club. She led fundraising events and logistics in the execution of medical mission trips to Ecuador, Vietnam, and Brazil. Additionally, she volunteered alongside peer medical students with support from the American Osteopathic Foundation and Habitat for Humanity rebuilding infrastructure in Staten Island after hurricane Sandy. She was honored with the Human Touch Student Leadership Award and the Sherry Arnstein Student Minority Scholarship for her dedication working with underserved populations both nationally and internationally. Dr. Funes completed her Preventive Medicine residency at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. During residency, she served as Chief Resident during the 2019-2020 training year and received a Physician Training Award in Cancer Prevention from the American Cancer Society for her work in colorectal cancer prevention at the local VA primary care clinics. Continuing her passion for medical missions and outreach, she collaborated with Doctors Without Borders in a vaccination campaign for the migrant and refugee population in Greece and was awarded with the Rutgers Global Public Health Scholarship. She is currently completing her Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine residency providing a patient-centered approach to treating musculoskeletal conditions using osteopathic manipulative treatment, image-guided interventions and regenerative medicine."
