Session Objectives: 

  1. Mitigating Weight Bias and Stigma|Provide update to current
  2. Obesity Treatment modalities for Adult and Pediatric patients
  3. Understanding pathophysiology and Obesity phenotypes to help inform treatment selection
  • The Maine Osteopathic Association designates this program for a maximum of 1.75 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Graduated from University of New England with Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine in 1997. Completed Residency in Family Medicine at the University of Massachusetts in 1999. Worked for St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston for 16 years as a Primary Care Provider. Founded St. Mary’s Weight Management Center in 2011 and has been working as an Obesity Medicine Specialist for the past 11 years. Joined Maine Medical Center in August of 2018 and is the Clinical Lead for Adult Obesity Program at MMC Weight and Wellness. Is Board Certified in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Medicine  the Maine Osteopathic Association, and the Obesity Medicine Association. She has served a Board Member for the Auburn YMCA in the past and currently sits as a Board member for the Bath Brunswick YMCA. She has two sons in college and lives in Brunswick with her husband of 29 years.

Dr. Valerie M. O’Hara, FAAP, ABOM, Medical Director of WOW 4 Wellness Clinic, Obesity Specialist: Dr. O’Hara brings 20 years of pediatric weight management experience to her families and community. She received her board certification in Obesity Medicine in 2013 via the American Board of Obesity Medicine. She began this focused work as part of the Maine Youth Overweight Collaborative in 2000.  She has been involved with Let’s Go as a Physician Champion, visiting the Primary Care Practices in the EMHS region since 2010, Dr.O’Hara presented research data at multiple National conferences, including OMA, AAP, The Obesity Society. WOW shared their Telemedicine Poster at Obesity Week/TOS/ASMBS conference, Summer Camp poster at the National AAP Fall conference in Chicago and Poster at the 2017 OMA re: The Cardiometabolic Disease Burden in Children presenting to a Rural Pediatric Stage 3 Weight Management Clinic – earning 1st Place honor. She has had numerous publications including Obesity and ADHD, Barriers to Pediatric Obesity Care, Sleep Dysregulation and Obesity, and is a co-author of the OMA Pediatric Obesity Algorithm 2018-2020. As an advocate for her patients, she shared her WOW experience with the Dept. of Defense in Washington, DC and with former Gov. Baldacci.  She is a member of The Obesity Society, The Obesity Medicine Association, and the Obesity Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. O’Hara graduated from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1996 and completed her Pediatric Residency at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center in 1999.  Dr. O’Hara is passionate about her patients and is dedicated to improving the health of the families with whom she works.

Allen Browne, MD's Profile

Allen Browne, MD Related Seminars and Products


Dr. Browne is a pediatric/adolescent weight management specialist and pediatric surgeon. He has worked in the development of treatment algorithms for pediatric obesity for 12 years as Clinical Director of the New Hope Pediatric and Adolescent Weight Management Program at UIC Medical Center in Chicago (2004-2008), Attending physician at The Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio (2008-2009), and founder of the Pediatric Weight Management Program at the Carle Clinic in Urbana (2012-2016). Dr. Browne developed and served as Principal Investigator of FDA IDE #1 to study the adjustable gastric band in adolescents with severe obesity.  Dr. Browne is the author and co-author of numerous articles, chapters, and guidelines on the treatment of pediatric obesity.  He is a member of the OMA Pediatric Committee, Section on Obesity of the AAP, the Pediatric Committee of The Obesity Society, and the Pediatric Committee of ASMBS. Dr. Browne is certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine (2014). Currently, Dr. Browne’s focus is advocacy and policy development for improved treatment for children with obesity.
