Short Description:
As a retired physician who has now become involved in suicide awareness and advocacy, I believe burnout is a very real issue among physicians and I am pleased to see that many medical schools and residencies are addressing the need for physician self care. My personal belief is that it is hard for physicians to ask for help since they are the ones who’ve gone into the profession to help others. Drivers of burnout include work load, work inefficiency, lack of autonomy and meaning in work, and work-home conflict. It may be hard for a physician to seek help for mental health issues because of stigma and the feeling that they are the ones who should be helping others and not needing help themselves. This can lead to self-medication with drugs or alcohol because of possible feelings of shame, guilt and confidentiality issues.

Short Description:
When discussing protocols, many practitioners may be wondering “where to start”. Do you start in the gut, with hormones, or adrenal management? What about sleep, nutrition, and exercise? Age management protocol prescriptions can be a bit overwhelming. However, there are several principles that truly fit for everyone. By examining “what we do know” and considering what the majority of persons can/can’t do, there is much common ground. Understanding this common ground, combined with systems biology and functional medicine principles, one is able to deliver a general protocol in which everyone can benefit. The protocol includes nutrition, supplementation, stress management, sleep, and hormone optimization. Moreover, measurables (biomarkers) will be detailed along with a very clear “how to” program describing all aspects of the “one for the ages” age management protocol with the clear objective being able to functionally and fully employ on Monday morning.

Over the last several years there has been mounting evidence that loneliness and social isolation play an important role in health and wellness. This includes in the medical profession. Concerns of loneliness and social isolation can easily be overshadowed by more established health risk concerns of smoking, obesity, and substance use. This talk will look at the current evidence, statistics and impact of loneliness/social isolation while offering some practical recommendations on how to combat it in ourselves and our patients.

The lecture aims to discuss the implementation of osteopathic recognition into an existing ACGME program. We delve into the areas of concern; curriculum, scholarship, faculty development and assessments. Clear examples are given for each area. The use of Scholar Teacher located on the OOA website is an excellent means of providing Osteopathic faculty development. The Scholar Series, also found on the OOA website will also assist in the development of Osteopathic research. In addition, we look into avenues for the submission of scholarly work through Scholar Complete. With these tools and discussion, we hope that all ACGME programs will reach Osteopathic recognition.

The care of children in the best of times poses unique challenges and opportunities. During times, such as the coronavirus pandemic, pediatric practices have needed to adapt to be able to provide the best care for children, and their family unit. By maintaining different office hours, utilizing social media and implementing telemedicine, pediatricians can provide quality care during this uncertain time. Use of OMT should be considered as part of the treatment of children by osteopathic doctors and encouraged during times of illness and stress.
